Understanding the Japanese Philosophy of Nagomi

Words have the power to evoke profound feelings, emotions and connections. Much like the warmth captured by Hygge, or the humanistic beliefs shared in Ubuntu, there are countless philosophies from across the globe that make life more vibrant for all. Today, we’re diving into an ancient philosophy that embodies everything calm – Nagomi.

What it means

Nagomi, pronounced “na-go-mi”, is derived from the Japanese verb “nagomu”, which means to calm down or to be comforted. At its heart, Nagomi is all about finding a sense of calm, peace, and tranquility within oneself, and by extension, with the world around. It signifies a harmonious balance between the inner self and the outer environment.

This philosophy emphasizes the importance of feelings over thoughts, promoting the idea that our emotions often harbor deeper truths about our well-being than our minds. For the Japanese, Nagomi is not just a fleeting feeling but an art of living that involves deeply respecting oneself and others and finding serenity even in the presence of chaos.

How you can practice Nagomi

Much like Hygge’s invitation to enjoy the cozy and comfortable, Nagomi encourages us to cultivate moments of introspection and inner calm in our lives. Here’s a few ways you can incorporate Nagomi into your daily routine:

  • Nature Walks: Japan has always held a deep reverence for nature. Take a quiet walk in nature, in a garden, forest or along the beach. Breathe in the fresh air, observe the colors and textures and let nature’s symphony soothe your soul.
  • Mindful Breathing: Spend a few minutes each day focusing on your breath. Deep, conscious breathing can instantly bring a feeling of calmness and clarity.
  • Traditional Arts: Engage in traditional Japanese arts like flower arranging or tea ceremonies. These activities require patience and concentration, allowing you to be fully present in the moment.
  • Minimalist Living: Embrace simplicity in life. Declutter your living spaces and keep only what is truly essential. The external calm will reflect internally.
  • Connection: Like Ubuntu’s focus on human connection, Nagomi also values the serenity that comes from harmonious relationships. Regularly engage in meaningful conversations and activities with loved ones, cultivating a space of mutual respect and understanding.

At Sage, we believe that life’s beauty lies in its intricacies. From the vibrant moments of togetherness that Hygge brings to the profound interconnection embodied by Ubuntu, and now, the tranquil harmony of Nagomi, there’s a world of philosophies awaiting to enrich our lives. Embrace them, and find your own path to a vibrant life.

Positive Relationships Can Boost Your Immune System, Seriously.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the profound impact of human connections. From a heartfelt conversation with a close friend to the silent understanding exchanged between life partners, our relationships play an integral role in shaping our lives. But did you know that these positive connections can also have tangible health benefits improving your wellbeing and vibrant living? Research suggests that nurturing positive relationships can give your immune system a serious boost!

More than Just Emotional Support

Undoubtedly, having a solid support system provides emotional stability. When life throws curveballs, friends and family often serve as our anchor, offering solace, advice, or just a listening ear. But there’s more going on beneath the surface. The emotional comfort these relationships provide is linked with physiological responses in our body.

When we feel loved, understood, and supported, our body reacts by reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol. Chronically high levels of cortisol have been associated with a host of health issues, including a weakened immune system. On the other hand, reduced stress levels allow our immune system to function optimally, fighting off illnesses more effectively.

The Science Behind the Connection

Several studies have delved into the relationship between social connections and immune function. One notable study found that individuals with strong social ties were less susceptible to the common cold. Another research piece indicated that students with positive social networks had better immune responses to certain vaccines.

The exact mechanisms remain a topic of ongoing research. Still, many experts believe that positive social interactions increase the production of beneficial chemicals in the brain. These chemicals can enhance the body’s defense mechanisms. Additionally, positive relationships often encourage healthy behaviors – like maintaining a balanced diet, exercising, or getting adequate sleep – all of which contribute to a robust immune system.

In an era dominated by digital interactions, it’s crucial to remember the significance of genuine, positive relationships. They not only enrich our lives emotionally but also fortify our physical health. So, the next time you share a laugh with a friend or enjoy a heart-to-heart with a family member, remember – you’re doing your immune system the biggest favor!

Forgiving Oneself and Others

Forgiveness is a cornerstone of one’s personal growth journey, and its importance can’t be overstated. At the very core, forgiving yourself starts as a choice, a conscious decision to release the weight of past regrets and to make peace with your actions and decisions, and with that choice comes the foundational elements of empathy, understanding, compassion, and kindness.

Empathy plays a crucial role in this journey. By putting oneself in another’s shoes, we not only gain perspective but also allow for healing to commence. It helps us to see beyond our narrow viewpoint and understand the broader picture. It reminds us that everyone, including ourselves, is fighting a battle that we may know nothing about.

Alongside empathy, understanding is pivotal. This means recognizing our mistakes, learning from them, and accepting that everyone has their journey filled with both ups and downs. Acceptance doesn’t mean we forget or condone mistakes, but rather that we recognize them as part of our growth.

When we look at our past with love and understanding, rather than judgment, we begin to heal. And once we show compassion towards others, even when it feels undeserved, we often find that we’re lightening our own burdens. It’s a mutual process of healing – for ourselves and for others.

Kindness is the thread that stitches together the fabric of forgiveness. It could be in small, daily acts or larger gestures. Whether it’s being gentle with oneself on a tough day or showing kindness to someone who might not have treated us well, these actions have a ripple effect. Kindness not only fosters an environment where forgiveness can thrive but also nurtures our own soul.

Despite understanding these foundational elements, we must remember that the act of forgiveness is fundamentally a choice. It’s a decision we make, transitioning from denial or resentment to a state of acceptance. This choice isn’t always easy; barriers often stand in our way. Yet, with determination, these barriers can be overcome.

Even after choosing forgiveness, the journey isn’t over. It’s essential to realize that forgiveness isn’t a one-time act or a destination but an ongoing process. Making peace with past mistakes, allowing ourselves the grace to move forward, and embracing the future with resilience are all parts of this continuous journey.

While the path of forgiving oneself and others can be strewn with challenges, it is a necessary step towards achieving inner peace and profound personal growth for your own Vibrant Living. So, as you move forward, reflect upon your journey, choose forgiveness, and embrace the healing that it brings!

The Art of Storytelling: Maya Angelou

At Sage Collective, we hold dear the voices that share tales of human spirit, challenges, and victories. Among these, Maya Angelou stands tall, with her stories resonating through time, offering glimpses of her life and the wider journey. Through Angelou, we gain a fresh perspective on the art of storytelling.

Bearing Witness to Life’s Highs and Lows

Like Gorman, the power of Angelou’s tales comes from her genuine honesty. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” tells of the difficulties she faced, from facing prejudice to personal pain. Yet, she chose to openly share, lighting the way for countless silent stories. By sharing her struggles, she magnifies her successes, showing us that every part of our journey matters. Every story, whether personal or broad, has a universal echo. Through Angelou, we connect with emotions and experiences that touch hearts worldwide.

A Dance of Words and Rhythm

Angelou’s writing draws us in, but her poetry is where her words truly dance. Poems like “Still I Rise” and “Phenomenal Woman” enchant with their rhythmic flow and uplifting messages. When shaping your story, let Angelou inspire you. Fill your narrative with rhythm and emotion, creating an experience rather than just a tale.

Driving Forward With Purpose

A defining trait of Angelou’s work is its clear intent. She didn’t just share life moments; she shared lessons. “Still I Rise” isn’t just her journey—it’s a rallying cry for the oppressed. She shows that stories can do more than entertain; they can ignite change. When you write, know that your words have the power to move hearts and minds.

Lessons from Angelou on Storytelling

Angelou’s storytelling imparts wisdom beyond the narrative. She teaches us the importance of authenticity—stories need to come from a place of truth. She reminds us to embrace both pain and joy, as both are essential parts of the human experience. Moreover, her work emphasizes the need for stories to have a purpose, a message that drives them forward.

In wrapping up, exploring storytelling through Angelou’s eyes reveals tales that mirror shared hopes, challenges, and dreams. Taking a leaf from her book, let’s believe that our stories, grounded in truth and purpose, can touch and change lives.

The Art of Slow Living: Embracing Mindfulness and Minimalism This Summer

As we bask in the long summer days, there’s a growing awareness of the need for slower, more intentional living. Building on our previous discussions about mindfulness, let’s explore how to harness the power of mindfulness and minimalism to experience a truly transformative summer. This season, we encourage you to embrace the ‘Art of Slow Living.’ Just as the sun takes its time to set, painting the sky, we too can bask in the moment, savoring the world around us. But how do we do this? Let’s delve into the practices of mindfulness and minimalism.

Mindfulness

We’ve previously touched on the importance of mindful movement practices like Tai Chi, Yoga, and Qigong in fostering vibrant living. This summer, we encourage you to take this concept of mindfulness a step further. Beyond just movement, try to infuse mindfulness throughout your day. Feel the warm breeze on your skin, taste the sweet fruits of the season and listen to the sounds of the outdoors. Each moment presents an opportunity to be fully present, and there is no better time than a summer day to cultivate this habit.

Practices like Yoga and Qigong allow for a deeper connection with oneself and the world around us. These spiritual practices can be incredibly potent when taken outdoors during summer. Perhaps a gentle yoga sequence by the beach or a quiet Qigong session in a blooming park? Take this summer as an opportunity to deepen these practices, fostering a larger appreciation for the beauty that surrounds you.

Minimalism

Alongside mindfulness, we invite you to explore minimalism this summer. Contrary to popular belief, minimalism is not about denying ourselves pleasures or living a bare-bones lifestyle. It’s about making conscious choices about what we allow into our lives, focusing more on experiences and relationships than on possessions.

How can you embrace minimalism this summer? Try decluttering your home, simplifying your diet to include more fresh, local produce, or choosing experiences over material possessions. After all, a hike with loved ones or a day spent exploring a new town leaves a longer-lasting impression than the newest gadget.

By merging mindfulness and minimalism, you create space for meaningful connections – with others, with the natural world, and, most importantly, with yourself. Slow down and savor the summer in all its glory, embracing the art of living more with less. Embrace this season of warmth and growth, knowing that the journey to vibrant living is one step at a time, one mindful moment at a time. Summer is your canvas – paint it with mindfulness and minimalism, and see the masterpiece that unfolds.

The Healing Power of Nature: Embracing Botanical Gardens

Life sometimes feels like it’s zipping by, doesn’t it? We often get so caught up in the rush that we forget to pause and simply be. But the beauty of vibrant living is in those pauses. That’s where we step in at Sage Collective – to invite you to stop, breathe, and immerse yourself in the vibrant living that nature offers. With its rich colors, textures, and diverse life forms, Mother Nature brings an oasis of tranquility and peace into our lives.

Our relationship with nature isn’t just a primal instinct. It’s a two-way street – nature nurtures us and in return, we protect and preserve it. Just think about how a simple walk in a park can melt away your stress and energize your spirit. That’s the healing power of nature, promoting not just our physical well-being but also boosting our mental health.

Think of botanical gardens and conservatories as front-row seats to the spectacle of vibrant living. They’re not just clusters of plants but treasure troves of biodiversity, acting as sanctuaries for plant conservation and research. At the same time, they give us a chance to explore, appreciate, and understand nature’s beauty and the significance of biodiversity.

Imagine strolling through these green havens. It’s more than just a pleasant walk. It’s an education, a stress-buster, and a celebration of global biodiversity all rolled into one. Plus, it’s good for your heart health too!

The best thing is you don’t need to step into a botanical garden to connect with nature. You can experience vibrant living right in your backyard or even on your balcony. A simple walk in your local park or some quiet time spent gardening can be your quick escape to nature. And don’t forget to engage your senses in these moments – feel the breeze, listen to the bird songs, or simply admire the greenery around you. These simple acts of mindfulness can bring an immensely calming effect to your day.

Vibrant living is all about embracing the healing power of nature. Whether it’s through visiting a botanical garden or finding moments of connection in your everyday life, it’s essential to let nature soothe your soul. Amidst the fast-paced chaos of our modern lives, let’s take a moment to step back, breathe, and find our peace in nature. Because when we connect with nature, we connect with ourselves, and ultimately, each other. So let’s celebrate our symbiotic relationship with nature and continue on this journey of vibrant living.

Juneteenth: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present, Envisioning a Vibrant Future

In the spirit of learning and understanding that fuels the Sage Collective, we’re delving into a significant moment in our shared American history, a moment that anchors us to our past as it guides us towards a more inclusive future – Juneteenth.

The essence of Juneteenth is one of freedom and liberation, dating back to 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved African Americans free. The truth of this newfound freedom, however, took two years to permeate every state, with Texas being the last to hear the news. Hence, Juneteenth was born, officially recognized by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021.

The celebration of Juneteenth, while filled with joy and reverence for the resilience of freedmen and freedwomen, was not devoid of strife. However, the spirit of determination and unity endured. By pooling resources, formerly enslaved people bought land in 1950, creating Emancipation Park in Houston, Texas, a testament to their collective resilience and a place for future Juneteenth celebrations.

The Juneteenth flag, designed by Ms. L.J. Graff, embodies this shared history and vision. Its colors echo the American flag, asserting the rightful place of freed people and their descendants as American citizens. The central star pays homage to Texas, while the bursting new star symbolizes a new dawn and new freedom.

As we honor Juneteenth, we also acknowledge the complex emotions that accompany this day of celebration. The weight of history can bring feelings of anxiety and stress, emotions we at Sage Collective encourage our members to acknowledge and discuss. We are committed to creating a safe space for these dialogues, believing that understanding our past is a crucial step toward shaping a vibrant and inclusive future.

Juneteenth, much like our mission at Sage Collective, is about embracing freedom and fostering vibrant living for all. It reminds us that freedom is also about the liberation of the mind and spirit. It’s about the courage to acknowledge the pain of our past, the determination to celebrate the progress of our present, and the vision to foster a future of justice, inclusivity, and vibrant living for everyone.

Join us as we commemorate Juneteenth this month and every month, and let its history and values inspire us as we continue to work towards a future where everyone can live vibrantly.

The Importance of Mental Health for Men: Breaking Down Barriers and Stigmas

As we embrace Men’s Health Month this June, we at Sage Collective aim to draw attention to an often-ignored aspect of men’s wellbeing – mental health. The stigmas and misconceptions surrounding this topic can often sideline it, but we believe it’s essential for everyone to pay attention to mental health just as much as physical health.

Traditional societal norms might suggest men should suppress their emotions and maintain an exterior of strength, thereby inadvertently neglecting their mental health. However, mental health issues do not discriminate between genders and can affect anyone. Acknowledging and addressing these issues is crucial for overall health and wellbeing.

The concept that men should endure their mental health struggles silently continues to prevail. These outdated notions not only undermine the severity of mental health issues but also discourage men from seeking the help they need. This is a narrative we, as a society, must strive to change.

Promoting a culture where mental health is openly discussed, where men are encouraged to express their feelings and seek assistance when needed, is vital. The first step in doing this is to encourage dialogue. The act of sharing personal experiences and listening to others can go a long way in fostering understanding and empathy.

In addition to fostering open dialogue, we also need to focus on educating ourselves and others about mental health. Knowledge about the various mental health issues, their symptoms, and how to seek help is an essential tool for early intervention and recovery.

It’s also important to dismantle the misconception that mental health care is a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it’s a demonstration of strength and self-awareness. It takes courage to acknowledge personal struggles and seek help.

Recognizing the importance of men’s mental health should not be confined to Men’s Health Month alone, but it’s a good place to start. It’s an opportunity to bring men’s mental health into focus, challenge the existing stigmas, and advocate for mental health as an integral part of overall health.

At Sage Collective, we’re dedicated to this mission. Join us this Men’s Health Month as we strive to spread awareness and create a society where mental health, for both men and women, is prioritized and discussed openly without prejudice.

Staying Agile: Flexibility and Balance Exercises to Help You Maintain Independence

As we navigate through life’s different stages, physical changes often accompany us. At times, these can impact our strength, agility, and sense of independence. However, at Sage Collective, we are firm believers in the body’s innate capacity to adapt. Today, we’re exploring how to stay agile with flexibility and balance exercises.

Flexibility and balance are the pillars of maintaining independence as we age. They are crucial in our daily tasks, from simple movements like bending to tie our shoes, to complex actions like reaching for an item on a high shelf or navigating stairs. Regular flexibility and balance exercises can enhance muscle tone, improve coordination, reduce risk of falls, and promote independence. Let’s delve into some exercises that can help.

Gentle Yoga

Yoga is an exceptional choice for promoting flexibility and balance. The slow and deliberate movements of yoga poses, such as the “tree pose” and “warrior pose”, can dramatically improve balance. For increased flexibility, try poses like “downward dog” and “cobra pose”. These poses work on various muscle groups, enhancing flexibility in the legs, spine, and shoulders. Starting with guided sessions by a trained instructor can ensure proper technique and safety.

Stretching Exercises

Regular stretching exercises are integral to maintaining and improving flexibility, and in turn, your range of movement. Basic stretches, such as the calf stretch, hamstring stretch, and gentle neck rotation, can be highly effective. Aim to hold each stretch for about 30 seconds, ensuring you feel a gentle pull, not pain. Over time, you’ll notice improved flexibility, which can make everyday tasks easier and more comfortable.

Balance Training

Simple balance exercises can significantly improve stability. Start with exercises like standing on one leg, shifting weight from one foot to the other, or walking heel-to-toe in a straight line. Initially, use the support of a chair or railing until you gain confidence and can perform these exercises without aid. Consistent practice can lead to noticeable improvements in your balance, coordination, and confidence in daily movements.

Staying agile involves more than physical flexibility and balance; it requires mental adaptability too. Incorporating these exercises into your daily routine sets you up to tackle life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Growing older doesn’t mean surrendering your independence. It’s about thriving, adapting, and embracing life’s ever-changing landscape. By dedicating time to activities like these, you’re investing in your independence, enhancing your quality of life, and paving the way to healthier aging. Let’s stay agile together, every step of the way.
