Health and Wellness

As part of our efforts to address the twin health challenges of social isolation and loneliness among older adults, we have also reimagined our programming in a manner that allows us to bring people together through the use of technology to create virtual activities and community. The Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020 has forced older adults, who are at the highest risk of complications, to grapple with new ways of living that will shape health outcomes and lifestyles for generations to come.

Thanks to our emerging collaboration with Chicago Commons, and our long-standing relationship with Willa Rawls Manor Apartments, we have hosted virtual sessions featuring Leadership Team member, Dr. James Galloway, former Assistant U.S. Surgeon General, who provided factual information about COVID 19 and strategies to prevent its spread to older adult participants, and answered their questions about “what’s next”.  There is already a demand for more of these programs and they are the first of many that will feature highly-regarded professionals sharing information on other health and wellness topics of interest.

Beyond informational programming, we are using technology to improve the fitness and health outcomes of program participants by supporting the practice of telemedicine to monitor basic health functions and incorporating the use of fitness trackers to encourage movement and enhance mobility.
